RE: Tamarillo Tree Posted 515 days ago I grew up with a Tamarillo tree. It did really really well. So much fruit. Too much actually. The weight of the fruit was too much for the tree that one of its main branches broke. My Dad had to bandage it up with a bandage to prevent loosing all the fruit that was not quite ready yet.
I would not think it could be grown in a pot. It does have shallow roots but i think it needs to be more sheltered and secure like against a house or shed as the wind could bring it down or damage a branch.
We at the time lived in South west sydney (liverpool and had the tree at the southern facing aspect of the home. However i believe a eastern or northerly position is more suited.
If you have success you may like a jam recipe. My late mum made heaps of jam as we just had so much fruit! We also put the pulp on our ice cream. YUM! With the price coles sells individual fruit for we would have been RICH!!! haha... So good luck. I'll attach the jam recipe.
Pls let me know if you buy a plant were you got it from.
Thanks
Brigette's Tamarilo Jam
6 Cups tamarillo pulp
6 cups sugar
5 cups boiling water
2 lemons (using both flesh & shredded peel)
Pour water on the tamarillo's let sit for 5 mins,
then pour water back into pan.
Skin tamarillo's & cut up. Discard the peel & return the flesh to pan.
Add the lemon flesh & peel to the tamarillo's. Boil until the fruit is tender, about 30mins.
Add sugar & boil until the jam sets when tested.
Remove from the heat & skim if necessary.
Allow Jam to cool for 5mins & pour into jars.
NOTE: 6 tamarillo's to a cup
i remember mum using the big 4l icecream tubs. One was ALL sugar the other ALL tamarillo. lol...
Enjoy! |
