It doesn't seem to mind the sun so long as it has constant moisture. I plant mine under a garden tap so there is always some water to keep the ground moist. A tap in the shade works even better though. In fact it's not so easy to keep it contained once it gets a go on.

I have mine in pots, and as long as it gets water it seems really happy.I have just cut 1 lot back as it was getting very straggly, it is now showing new growth again and starting to look good,once this one is back and growing I will do the other one.The problem I find is the leaves get eaten other than that it grows fine.

i had mint growing under a tap in the back yard
but with water restrictions it has gone to god as don says

Hi There, Mint is a typical shade lover. It doesn't like anymore than the first little bit of sun in the morning. Everyone who has grown mint for years will tell you that all mints, even south east asian ones like Vietnamese mint which is fabulous both hot and minty, just loves cool shade and lots of water and the best place to plant it is under a dripping tap. Well, I know that it is not good to have dripping taps but that gives you an idea of the best place to grow it. I grow all my mints under a row of lime trees where I have pulled the branches down with string and tent pegs so that they fruit better. That means that the branches almost touch the ground and provide the absolutely perfect place to grow all your mints. Don't forget to always plant them in a pot with the bottom cut out so that they don't go wild and it also helps keep the soil moist and also mulch with grass clippings (weed free, of course) because they seem to love those too and draw the moisture out of them as well and then they break down into compost and don't forget to protect them against slugs and snails.

I live in Cairns and have a large patch of mint which receives only afternoon sun. It gets plenty of moisture. the little green grasshoppers love it.

I have tried my mint in a few positions before, but now I have it on a balcony where it only gets morning sun and I water it frequently. Its growing beautifully in these conditions.
