Any Canberra Vegie growers?

Posted 951 days ago

I want to establish a great vegie garden where I can self supply ourselves throughout each season. Nothing beats fresh vegies. I have only succeeded in growing parsley, zucchini and tomatoes so far. The winter selection was alittle more difficult.....I have planted the following only because they were available at Bunnings so just assume they must be in season. I am currently growing which I planted end of April:
- Garlic
- Cauliflower
- Broccoli
- Onions
- Leeks.
- Spinach.

I think one of the problems I have being winter is that the vegie garden doesn't get as much sun as it does in summer, alot more has shade then it does in summer and I did not consider this when I planted. The cauliflower and Broccoli get most of the sun but the spinach is growing very slow because it is in mostly shade.....would it hurt if I moved them? It is coming to 3 months since I planted them. The Onions are mostly in the shade as well.

It would be great to get in contact with other vegie growers in Canberra to learn what they are doing to succeed growing vegies in this climate.

Any help please???

The garlic, leeks and onions can be moved with no problems, or just leave them to fend for themselves. Spinach slows down in Winter, but it will come good. Basically, cold-weather veggies don't need heaps of sunlight. Hope this helps.

I live in canberra also, and have pretty much planted the same as you, with the same result. I guess we just wait for the weather to warm up a bit.
