Resurrecting a lawn

Posted 218 days ago

Hi!

I am wanting to resurrect a very sad looking lawn. It has patches of growth and is on very hard clay soil. I am wondering what I need to do to try and get it growing again.... Keeping in mind that we have level 3 water restrictions, so i can only water one day a week, and I am also a beginner gardner (but very eager to learn!).

Cheers,
Riki

Sounds as though the soil is compacted. Hire a lawn roller from a day hiring firm and go over the whole lawn with it.

It would then be good if you could rake some coarse sand into those open holes, just like a thin top dressing. Failing that if you plan to do the rolling job the day you are allowed to use the water, you could just try getting water into those open holes.

Having said all that I have no idea what sort of grass you are growing in Adelaide or if now (pre winter) is a good time to be trying to restore a lawn down there. Some advice from a nursery might be advisable on those questions.

I found that by not removing the lawn cuttings when mowing, the lawn has a constant supply of compost and helps to build a thicker lawn. Fertilising with Neutrog's Blade Runner in summer will help as well.

Riki being a beginner the roller mentioned, I think needs to be clarified, it is a roller with spikes on it. If the area is not to big the same effect can be achieved with a garden fork, pushed in and rocked back and forth. Gypsum could then be applied.

Hi trikster19.All of the above plus applying Seasol as per directions.Seaweed product helps root growth, but isn't a fertiliser as such.Attack any weeds as soon as they appear or they will take over extremely quickly.Best to dig them out rather than using weedkillers. Also, apply a liquid clay-breaker(works much faster than a dry one).Put the seaweed and claybreaker on after spiking and directly before watering. You can't overdose with either of those products,so be generous. It's hard yakka to set things up right, but well worth the effort. What type of grass is it,by the way?
