What to plant for long and narrow driveway?

We have a long and narrow driveway (south facing).

Any suggestions of what to plant? Something that is low maintenance and hardy will be great. For one particular part of the driveway where we stop our car occasionally, we will need the space to get in and out of the car. So we can't have anything that will hinder the opening of a car door. Any suggestions on what we can do there?
