Frost damaged Lilly Pilly

Posted 148 days ago

We planted about 30 plants (Acmena Smithii variety) about 6 months ago and they have been growing really well until a couple of very heavy frosts hit all at once ... pretty much all the leaves have either turned brown or dropped off and the plants are all looking very unwell! I'm not sure what action (if any) we can take now, to protect them from further damage (ie. pruning, covering up etc ...). Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Whatever you do, don't do any pruning until all danger of frosts has passed in spring. The frost 'damage' looks bad but it's nature's way of sacrificing a few tips in order to protect the rest of the plant. Leave the yucky looking damage there for the rest of the winter, an when the danger of frosts is well and truly over, and the plants are showing signs of growth, prune them, water well, feed them, then water well afterwards.

I've heard of people covering there plants with material at night to protect them from frosts. Maybe worth a try?

I also heard that it's not the actual frost that does the damage, but the frost thawing too quickly. So if you could somehow protect them from thawing too quickly (shade from the morning sun)?

Can anyone expand on the science behind frost damage?

Does anyone know if hosing the frost off in the morning works?
