Jacaranda

Posted 151 days ago

I live in Auckland and planted a Jacaranda 10 years ago, it has grown very well and is now about 20ft tall. Only one problem, about three years ago it stopped flowering. Any suggestions on anything that I can feed it?

Has it been too cold for flowering? Have the branch tips been getting burnt by frost during winter? 20ft isn't to bad for the height after 10 yrs in your cool climate. They usually flower after a dry winter and when the spring rains are due to start. Does that describe your climate?

May be best not to feed it anything. "Neglect" can encourage the tree to reproduce(i.e produce flowers in an attempt to bear seed).

Moderate growth = encourage flowering
Vigorous growth = reduce flowering

As the tree matures it will cease to grow so vigorously and the flowering will improve.(Providing your climate and soil are suitable, as per pomolo's comments)

If you still wish to fertilise use a product that contains an N:P:K ratio with a relatively high amount of P an K

I know this will sound really weird, but I have read (in 'Dig' by M. Kirton) that if a jacaranda is reluctant to flower it can be given a good 'whack' with a piece of wood! She claims it really works & I think I have heard the same from other sources.

It is rare to get a frost in Auckland. But you could not say that our winter is dry. Some of the new growth flowers, say about 10%. As yet I have not applied anything to the tree. In the meantime sounds like I should give it a good whack!

The whack with a lump of 4x4 story has been around for a long time. It's refering to the fact that the tree will feel threatened by the attack and jump into action and start flowering and producing seed incase it hasn't got long to live. I don't know if it's ever been proven true or not.

kinjalu,

Are there any Jacaranda's performing/flowering well in your area? If not it may be climate etc. that's the problem.

I've heard the stick theory too and I reckon you should try it, if it doesn't help flowering, it may help to relieve some frustration.
