philodendron questions

we have philodendrons growing up trees. They are a long way up, tall gum trees. The previous owner planted them. They look really good but we are worried that they might eventually kill the trees.
In the case that they are dangerous to the trees we thought perhaps we could cut the phils off at say 7 foot, still enjoy the look of them but protect the trees.
What would you advise.
