Bouganvillia cutting

Posted 591 days ago

I am in the process of selling my house and would love to take a cutting of my bouganvillia, I have been told you take them in Janurary. Is there anyway I can do it now? thanks. I live in Melbourne.

Do you have a choice? If you are close to moving then you have to take cuttings before you go. Best suggestion I can make is to take a lot of cuttings. Then you have a better chance of maybe getting one to take under the out of seasons conditions.

As long as the cutting is kept in a moist humid warm environment, theres no reason why it shouldn't strike. I propogate all year around. It is a little slower in the cooler months, but if you can create the right conditions, there shouldn't be a problem.

This is my method, and I have about an 80% success rate. Take several cuttings just below a leaf node. strip the cutting of all leaves, just leaving 2 at the very top. In the meantime, prepare a small pot of moistenend compost. I use seed raising compost. Place the cuttings into the pot and place a plastic bag over the pot secured by an elastic bound. Place the pot in a warm position. I use my laundry, because it gets a lot of morning sun and the temperature throughout the day resembles a hot house. Depending on what type of bouganvillea it is, it could several weeks, even a few months, so be patient.
