Grevillea not flowering

Posted 629 days ago

About three years ago, I bought a Grevillea 'Winpara Gem'. It started off ok, but after three years of growing (it is now 1m tall, 1/2 metre wide) it has not flowered.

It recieves about 5 hours of sunlight a day; the soil type is clay; and the pH of the soil is 8; but I am of the understanding that 'Winpara Gem' can handle this high akalinity.

It has, however, a yellow tinge to its leaves, which I strongly suspect is lack of iron due to the akaline soil. Does that sound right? And if it is a lack of iron, I would have no idea how much iron powder to apply to it.

Thank you in advance.
:-)

Try Iron Chelate onto foliage and soil, and check after 4 or 5 days for any imrovement in the newer leaves. If it looks better, give it a dose of seasol and maybe even a slow-release for natives. Iron Chelate is sold as such at any nursery in a small pack with full instructions. Hope it comes good for you. Give us un update in a couple of weeks.

I also have Wimpara Gem doing poorly. I bought it after seeing BBY and we live on a rocky shale site. Some Grevilleas do well and others just die. Our neighbour also says he gets only a 40% success rate with Grevilleas. We have a huge problem with ants and I suspect they might be part of the problem.

Time for update :-)

It appears that the iron chelate has worked quite well, so thanks for that Hutcho. The leaves are fairly green, however, I have no idea how often I should apply it to keep the leaves looking green....every 2 weeks? It is in an otherwise really healthy state - its just had a massive growth spurt. I do hope that it will soon start flowering too.....

I had a westringia native rosemary in front of it as well that was looking rather awful - leaves were yellow with black tops - I had no idea what was causing the problem, but that looks heaps better since I have used the chelate. Still, I'm a little puzzled as I bought the plant from State Flora and it was recommended to be planted in limestone soil. Anyway, at least both plants have seemed to have picked up some. :-)
