New Pots-do they require stones in their base?

Posted 743 days ago

I vaguely recall being told that the use of stones in the base of a new pot, over the drainage holes is NOT necessary.(?) Can anyone confirm or deny this for me and tell me what should be used instead,(if anything) please?

Hi KymP. If they're large holes, some fly-screen or shade cloth will keep the soil in. Or stones. That's the only reason for it except in the case of plants which need extremely good drainage; then the stones is the way to go. Hope this helps a bit.

Hutcho is right in regards to retaining the soil within the pot, but the more important aspect of good drainage would need to be achieved by raising the pot off the ground so that the water drains out of the holes freely by use of pot feet, and by drilling extra holes into the pot with a drill.

It shouldn't be a problem with plastic pots but concreate and terracotta are a hole other story (hehe I made a funny).

I have found terracotta pots notoriously lacking in holes. Compare them to a plastic pot from the nurseries and you will see what I mean.

Thanks for the info, I have drilled now 8 extra holes in both pots, put them on feet, used fly wire mesh and some large scoria stones in the base....so here's hoping the plants will have a long and happy life!! Many thx for the responses they were both very helpful!

cheers, KymP
