I have mine in several locations. Pots, ground, full sun and shade. They sometimes dry out and burn to a crisp but come back ok. The choice is yours.

I have hundreds of them and they are even growing up tree trunks. They prefer part shade but are hardy and better neglected if you get good Summer rain. You can also just put the pot you bought on the ground under a tree and it will thrive. They don't need dirt and orchip potting compound is best . If you have wood chips for mulch then pile it up around them, give them the occasional sprinkle and sit back and enjoy.

Bromeliads are great and quite easy to grow. I planted mine in the garden in a gap between some rocks in dappled shade. I filled the hole with a mix of soil, gravel and leaves - anything i could find that would make the soil course... i expected them to die but instead they've thrived, flowered and multiplied over the past year or so!!!
I also planted them in just soil but i found those ones didnt grow so well... so my advice is try making the soil more course!

pot in mix of potting mix and medium sized bark.keep the well topped up with water.fertilize occassionally. The broader the leaf ,the more sun can be tolerated .protect from hot summer sun ..so under a lightly shaded tree or shade cloth.do not over water.
You can wrap rootzone in newspaper ,tie with rubber band ....place in a wicker basket for a tempory display and keep paper moist..beautiful!!
