Help! Sick tree in backyard. Posted 147 days ago Hi everyone,
I am hoping for some wisdom from the crowd.
My wife and I are having a problem with a medium sized tree in the back corner of our yard. Based on the colour of the leaves, I think the tree is far from healthy. The leaves have slowly been going brown over the past 3 months. There is also a green tinged spotting over the trunk which looks like mould to me.
Until recently, the tree has been very healthy with bushy green leaves.
I suspect it may be due to:
Over watering.
The tree gets 15 minutes of water per day at 4am as part of an automated system. I am unsure how effective the drainage is.
Recent landscaping.
The timing seems to coincide with the laying of new concrete and pavers in the backyard.
Pruning.
Two large branches were removed from the tree.
Any advice on how to correct the problem is much appreciated. I would also love to identify the tree.
Thank you and regards,
Richard

RE: Help! Sick tree in backyard. Posted 146 days ago Firstly, congratulations on a good coverage of possible problems with all the pics. They are such a help with diagnosis.
With the very first pick I thought your tree was in really big trouble but when I saw the leaves in closeup I was pretty sure that all you are seeing is new growth tips on the tree. Those leaves look new and healthy.
The green spotting is only lichen and does no harm. It's like a moss of sorts and looks kind of beautiful in it's own right.
Your watering regime seems to be working if the tree is getting new growth. It looks as though you might be on a hillside so water should drain away easily but only you can be sure of how wet the ground is.
In one shot of the lichen there looked to have been damage to the tree trunk at some stage. It looks like an old wound so no need to worry about it.
I have one question. What is the pvc pipe along the surface of the ground for? A suggestion to add is don't let those leaves around the base of the trunk get too high and thick because they can cause collat rot in the trunk.
I hope your tree grows on to bigger and better things.
Good luck. |

RE: Help! Sick tree in backyard. Posted 145 days ago Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. It's much appreciated.
The base of the tree is on a small decline, but there is a retaining wall effectively boxing in the base. The PVC pipe is for the drainage outlet for the pool and eventually goes to the storm water drain.
Thanks also for the suggestion about the leaves. I'll keep it tidy to avoid the rot. We live in Bardon, which is inner west Brisbane, at the base of Mt Cootha, so the soil is mostly clay under the surface layer.
