Lawn Care and Changing

Posted 566 days ago

Hi All,

I am looking at changing my backyard grass. At the moment it is Kikyu and it struggles a bit with lack of sun, as half the back yard get a fair bit of shade and a dog. Was reading up on it and was thinking of Sir Walter Buffalo as it says it does not need as much sun as kikyu, is the correct?

And if i was to change it what is the best way to remove the old grass (i was thinking killing it with round up) and what is the best time of year? i am in sydney.

Thanks for any help.

Sir Walter definately doesn't need as much sun but it won't grow in total shade either. It's still has to have pretty good drainage and I would do it in spring if you can water it enough at that time.

Some years ago I had a problem with shade under a bottle tree and a jacaranda in close proximaty to each other so it was all but total shade. I was given a couple of sprigs of 'sweet smother grass' and it was lush in no time. Such a wonderful area under the trees on the grass. So that may help. I would seriously consider killing the kikyu lovely grass but so invasive.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

no you don't just want to kill it as it will cause problems later on when laying the new grass. you can usually get a machine that removes or turns and loosens the dirt and grass. then you can add your new mud to the top and then layer the new grass. you also achieve a higher height around path ways which looks good

Sir Walter Buffalo is the best option for you; it really doesn’t need as much sun.
You can use an herbicide called roundup for kill your old grass. It works great and only kills what it contacts. It will not stay in the soil and kills all the way to the root. Spray and repeat in 3 days. All will die then you can plant. That simple! If you dig up before killing the grass it will and I mean will come back.

LAWN dethatching, vertimowing

Posted 508 days ago

I have Sir Walter, that is thick, sick, horrible to look at, it has approx 1/4" to 1/2" of thatch build up between the soil layer and top.

Am told it need to be vertimowed (removal of thatch build up) to allow the roots to penetrate the soil (roots are struggle due to heavy thatch build up).

AM unable to locate in the Sutherland area a company that provides "vertimowing" (de-thatching) - CAN ANYONE ADVISE of a Company / Person or other ideas, am getting desperate as needs to be done in the current spring.
