Help Save My Red Gum Tree

Hi

We have a Sydney Red Gum - over 15 metres in height and have just noticed a 20cm long by 4cm deep split of the bark at the base of the tree. I can't see any insects and there is only minimal sap leaking.

We would be most grateful for any ideas of the cause and any remedies?
