Camelias Problem

Posted 54 days ago

Our Camelia bushes had large buds ready to bloom however these have died before flowering. Also the leaves are drying out. This has just happened and the only thing that I can think is that I fertised them a week ago with Checken manure. They have had plenty of water and beautiful spring weather. Any suggestions what's happened?

If your camelias are going a brown colour it sounds like they are getting to much water.Try not watering them as much.

The following lines are from my camellia book.

1. Late flowering varieties will not bloom well in our climate.(Brisbane)
2. A plant sets too many buds. Disbud by gently removing several buds. Leave 1 or 2 terminal buds and 2 along the stem.
3. Plants not fertilised for many years do not flower.
4. Conversely, too much fertiliser will force new growth causing bud loss.
5. Formal doubles and certain varieties ae prone to balling and fail to open.
6. Very hot and dry or very wet weather and sudden temperature changes can cause bud drop.
7. Plants in too much shade.
8. In winter if early morning sun shines on the buds, wet with dew, they will burn and fail to open.

If none of these answer your question, you could try contacting a Camellia Society in your area for help.

That sounds good Pomolo. I have a camelia in a pot that I'm planning to put in the garden but couldn't think of a position for it. If it doesn't like early morning sun on wet dewy mornings I might just position it in the west facing front garden.

Would anyone know if camelias like washing machine water (I use environmentally friendly washing liquid), or if they'll be ok in full afternoon sun?

Even the hard, dull, dry ground harbours life - which is brought to the surface with the fresh touch of drenching rain (or the humble watering can).
