Young trees question Posted 54 days ago Over the last two years we have planted trees (native and deciduous) on our 5 acre property. These have become fairly well established and are now about two-three years old. Originally I tried to keep a perimeter around the base of the tree, mulching this area. However a wet winter has created a weed and grass growth right up to the base of the trees. I have tried to dig or pull some of these out by hand however some are quite dense and deep rooted. I would like to know if its safe to spray a grass / weed killer right up to the base of trees. I have seen some people do this but often wondered if this could kill the tree. |

RE: Young trees question Posted 53 days ago someone up the road from us did just that, and now the tree is dead, so I would probably look for an alternative solution. |

RE: Young trees question Posted 52 days ago It is best to keep any poisons clear of the tree trunks at this time. Glyphosate around the base of a mature tree wouldn't do it any harm but yours still probably have softish wood. |

RE: Young trees question Posted 51 days ago Have you tried Round-Up on the weeds? (I think thats what the last guy was suggesting, Glyphosate) You would only need to touch the actual weed with the Round-Up, not the soil so that way you are not poisining the soil or the tree. Also it is very safe as essentially it is only a high concentration of salt that you are using to kill the weeds. |
