Plants in Pots

Posted 711 days ago

I have several potted plants, that, over time have grown up and the soil has gone down, some quite considerably.I assume I should top up the pots with potting mix but if I do, the new potting mix will come half way up the stem of the plant. So, how do I do this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Howdy junette,
The best thing to do is repot. Most plants would appreciate it after about 4 years - some as often as 2 yearly. Take them out of their pots, trim off the roots that are wrapping around or growing towards the centre or anything that is damaged and knock off the old potting mix. Replace with new and plant at the same level on the trunk as they were before. If you just add potting mix you can encourage fungal conditions and it won't add anything where the plant can use it. If you're cutting alot of root system off you can use seasol to help with root growth. Make sure you water them consistantly and as if they're new plants and don't do it when it's too hot. hope this helps

If it's plants that don't like their root system disturbed too much, lift the plant out leaving the old soil in place around the rootball, then put the fresh soil in the pot and replace the plant on top. It's best if possible to go up at least one pot-size as a general rule, but not strictly necessary. Don't forget the seasol.

Some plants I pot with wide strip of strong plastic or even artificial fabric strip of material (as any natural fabric will rot) and when time comes to re-pot I uncover the handles and pull the plant out of the pot root ball and all.

Not always it is as simple as sometimes roots fill the pot and make it tight fit.

But it always helps to pull the plant out of the pot.
