Australian Native hedging plants Posted 713 days ago Adelaide Hills but low rainfall and tank water only want a drought resistant, frost hardy native to grow as a low informal hedge. Max height 1.5 mtrs, any coloured flower but yellow and no westringias, maybe something with red tips. Would anyone suggest a grevillea? Any help would be grateful. |

RE: Australian Native hedging plants Posted 709 days ago Hiya, don't know too much about frost hardy plants but I wonder if Callistemon (Bottlebrush) 'Little John' would do it? (about a metre or less). Robyn Gordon (Grevilla about 2m max) seems to be able to cope with anything here in Perth but the best thing to do would be to have a trek around in your area and see what's doing really well. If you don't know what something is take a close up pic or sample if you can and take it to your local nursery. The other one you could look into is Callistemon 'Great Balls of Fire' which has a pinky red coloured new growth - it seems to be pretty tough. |

RE: Australian Native hedging plants Posted 708 days ago I've seen Robyn Gordon used as a hedge a fair bit around Sydney to very good effect. It's o.k. for frost and heatwaves, and loves rubbishy soil if thats what you're up against. Also loves a good hair-cut any old time. Good call, alirose. |

RE: Australian Native hedging plants Posted 707 days ago Cheers Hutcho, Astonfields the only thing that you will need to be aware with is that Robyn Gordon is one of the Grevilleas that people can have a skin reaction to. I never have and i've worked in nurseries with them for a while but I know of a few people who come out in hives when they brush past them. |

RE: Australian Native hedging plants Posted 706 days ago Thanks Alirose and Hutcho for your responses and some great ideas for hedging. Not many people growing native hedges locally but Robyn Gordon or Little John sound terrific. Thanks again and happy gardening. |
