Replanting mature trees and shrubs

Posted 534 days ago

I would like some advice on the best way to replant mature tress and shrubs. My husband and i are rebuilding and we have many mature trees and shrubs we would like to relocate to other areas of our garden, some of these include conifers, rhododendrons, cherry blossoms, maples and magnolias. If anyone can give us some advice on the best way to go about this it would be very much appreciated. If you have some contact details on someone that could assist that would be great also.

Time is important in the advice I can pass on to you. I have used this method on 2 occasions and it has worked for me. Mine were shrubs BTW. I have never moved a mature tree.

Six months prior to the transplant, use a spade to cut through the earth and the roots far enough from the trunk to allow a fair sized root ball. Only do this half way around the shrub. Leave the other half in tact.

Push some loose earth back over the newly cut roots and treat in the usual way. This allows the cut roots to form new roots that will be ready for the transplant when the time comes. This way at least one side of the plant will be able to cope with the move even if you happen to wreck a few roots on the other side when you dig it up. Make sure the ground is well watered before you move the plant. Liquid feed with a seaweed solution when it'ssettled in it's new spot.
