Weeds

Posted 701 days ago

I live on a large block backing to bush and have a lot of weeds. What is the best way to get rid of wandering dew and fishbone fern?
Also we had some large gums taken down and they are now sprouting again. How can I prevent this regrowth?

Thanks in advance.

Wandering jew and fishbone will die if you put a dab of Roundup/weed killer on them. However, you have to be vigilant and keep at it, do it over a few times. Otherwise, dig out the roots and leaves and place in plastic bag and put in bin. Don't leave any leaves etc behind.

Gum trees - get a stump grinder and get the stump out (you hire them). If you ask the neighbours most people need stumps out and you can hire the grinder and do the whole neighbour hood in one morning - save you some money if you all share. Otherwise keep putting weedkiller on them, over and over.

I don't understand why people want to kill weeds, I have learnt to live and work with them in the garden and on the farm. Weeds are mother natures way of fixing the soils when we stuff it up, mother nature always trys to fix our mistakes. If you want another plant to grow to replace the weeds plant it amongst them. I do this all the time, I use marshmallow, capeweed as protectors of the new plants I am growing, I just pull out a little of the weeds by hand and plant the new plant, it is protected by the frosts from the larger weeds. It works fabulously, weeds don't like competition from other plants but you can reclaim parts of your garden working with the weeds and stop using such harsh chemicals when there really is no need.
