Help with Camellia

Posted 717 days ago

I live in the Adelaide area and have two camellia sasanqua "Paradise Diana" plants I bought about 2 months ago that are both suffering from very dried leaved that are dropping off. They are planted in different area of my yard. One is in the ground next to a carport and quite shaded. The other was originally planted in the ground near some hydrangeas under a shaded pergola, but was recently moved into a large pot in the same area containing Camellia potting mix after all the leaves dropped. It is not showing any signs of new growth. Any ideas?

I'm no camellia expert but it sounds as though yours have been through a lot since you bought them. Transplanting can be traumatic for plants specially if done in the heat and I know Adelaide has been suffering it's fair share of hot weather recently.

Test the one you have put into a pot to see if it's is still alive (just run your thumb nail down the bark of the plant to lift the first layer of growth) If it green underneath then it's still hopeful that it may recover.

Try using a seaweed fertiliser according to directions. It's helpful when transplanting.

sasanquas are grown in the SUN while camellia japonica in morning sun or filtered / dappled light. All MUST be grown in acid soil or as you have done, in a specific potting mix and they DETEST dryness......i.e.KEEP MOIST.If in pots then good drainage IS ESSENTIAL!! Try not to dig around root zone and mulch with cow manure and peet.
