Help choosing Sun loving plants

Posted 646 days ago

Hi Everyone,

My partner and i are trying to do up our front yard, but no matter what we plant it dies due to too much sun. The front faces east (i think...) it gets the whole days worth of sun! The only plants that have survived are the red fountain grass and a standard rose. I would like the front to be made up of a lot of leafy simple plants to add colour and texture.

Your ideas of some plants that love full sun is greatky appreciated as we are lost!!!!

Thank you

Where do you live? Many Grevilleas (Coastal Varieties do well). Honey Gem loves sun but hates wet Summers. Grevillea Marmalade is tough. Choice will depend on how much water a plant needs too. Jessamine is great! Lantana hybrids also give long flowering colour but need pruning to keep them under control. Mauve , yellow and white varieties are good.Crepe Myrtles are fabulous and some are dwarf varieties. The good thing about them is they let sun through in Winter because they are deciduous.

Here's our Top 10 list of sun-loving pot plants. Pots and tubs in the sun will dry out quickly so ensure plants have ample root space, are regularly fertilized and watered to keep them healthy and happy.
• Tubs of Daisies
• Agapanthus
• cordyline australis
• Hibiscus
• Herbs
• Flowering annuals
• Chinese Jade
• Crassula Obvata
• Gardenias
• Acmena Alleyn’s Magic
• Cumquats

Hi longiraffe,
usually the nth side of the house gets sun all day, the east mainly in the morning.
What rooms do you have at the front of the house? if you want to keep them cool in summer and warmer in winter (I think youre in SA?) , Id suggest planting a deciduous tree, If you like the heat in those rooms all year round - then no tree.
Gardenias have great foliage, as well as the beautiful flowers, Magnolias too. My fav is the Port Wine, and related cocos.
Cycads are interesting.
Most natives love heat and sun, and are tough enough for poor soil.
Geraniums can be tough.
I have Hipeastrums that love my nth facing f/yard.
Cordilines and Cannas are used a lot in new gardens, but cannas may need a bit of water.
Most veggies like a lot of sun.

Hope I might have given you some different ideas.
