kikuyu and buffalo grasses

Posted 651 days ago

In our area we have kikuyu and buffalo grasses which everybody knows are very invasive. It will grow in the dark and keep close to the service of the soil.We want to build a slightly raised vegetable plot, does anybody know if we were to install a `foundation` in the ground around the plot, would this keep the grasses from coming in underneath? Has anybody tried this and how far down would we have to go down?

Thanks.

Hi Woodend

My husband built me a timber enclosed vege garden which is raised so I don't have to bend too far and around the outside of it he laid a path of bricks around all four sides. This would be the answer to your problem instead of having to put foundations in, you don't have to build it up too high, just as much as you want it. I hope it works for you as good as mine works for me. Regards Jocelyn

I have dug down 10cm and installed physical barriers for my garden beds and this was NOT ENOUGH!! The underground runners find their way through by following whatever they come up against until they find a weakness.
If i could do my beds over again I would create a barrier at least 20cm down, 30cm if I could manage it. Also lay some bricks around on the surface as in the previous reply to make the grass have to work even harder!!
