Plant Identification websites

Posted 140 days ago

I have some plants & weeds in my back yard and I have no idea of what they are, does anyone know a website that will help me identify them without knowing their name?

I know that a nursery would be the best bet, but the closest one is about 100kms away, and I would like to avoid having to take so many samples that far.

I'm not sure if this applies Australia wide but I think the Botanic Gardens could be the go. At least I stumbled on the Royal Botanic Garden Vic. site which I think had such a set-up. This was some time ago though, so I could be mistaken. Otherwise it was a government based site particularly for rural areas. Sorry but that's the best I can do.

Hi mistrish.
Back again! I found the site and it was neither of the two I first thought. Try: http://www.weeds.org.au/natsig.htm
Goodluck!

I'm studying Horticulture at the moment and found my local Library had some good books on weeds, good photos too to help with ID. The only problem is finding the time to look through the books and find the appropriate photo. Good luck,
no doubt they will be common weeds if they are in your backyard. Try, flatweed, creeping oxalis, lambs tongue, common couch, dandelion, wireweed, white clover, summer grass, flickweed. This list will give you a few to start with.

Thank you for replying Pamelas, the things in my yard were more like shrubs & trees. they were in the garden bed, masquerading as garden.
I had a friend who used to work in a nursery come and see them, one was a wild tobbacco plant x 4 (+ 7 seedlings growing in the lawn), one was a bleeding heart vine (nice, but was right in front of the gate) there was also Camphor Laurel saplings x3, Some kind of seed pod tree that might have been a Cassia x37, China doll x100 (unsure of the proper name), Asparagus fern x7, and something else we couldnt identify with a name, but has berrys and spreads easily.
So we have had a lot of work to do.
But it has left a lot of room for the plants I would like to put in.
