Help with fuchsias

I live in Melbourne and after this summer my fuchsias are either dead or barely alive. What is the best position for them?
I have read if they are always in the shade they will not flower.
What about in pots? I have read that they do not do well in pots. But these are the only ones still alive because I moved them out of the sun.
How much sun do they need (if any)?
Do fuchsias need to be shaded all summer? Help!!!
