Allergies in the Garden

Posted 713 days ago

We recently moved out to an acre at Bargo and as much as we love the garden, unfortunately something is affecting my sinus' and allergies very badly. We're not sure exactly what plants are the cause. I dont know all the names of the plants but mostly we have fraxinus (about 22 lining the driveway) and a few different types of natives (wattles, proteas, grevilleas) as well as some acacias. If anyone could help us get to the bottom of it, we'd truly appreciate it. Thank you.

Howdy, the most common ones that can cause sinus allergies are plants such as wattles and bottlebrush (or some of the grasses). There are some unexpected like olives and london plane. From the description though it's probably the wattles. Grevilleas can cause skin reactions but only in some people and only if they brush against them. When something comes out in flower and suddenly you have a reaction you have a pretty good indication however the best thing would be to go to your doctor and get a skin reaction test. They test the most common allergins and would give a definative answer. That way you won't have to get rid of any innocent plants.

hey bargomum, don't they drive you up the wall. I have suffered allergies for most of my life, I always do the mowing wearing a dust mask, (we have an acre, use a ride on) but after the recent rains I decided I would do the job without the mask because everything was fresh and barely dry enough.

I spent the next two weeks totally blocked up in the tubes, those maddening itchy eyes, still not over it.

My doctor reckons I have it so bad that just about anything will set me off, I think alirose has some good advice there, try the doc first, they haven't helped me much, but you may find as I did, that it's just something we have to live with.

We lived in Perth for 36 years, and after the first three I got hay fever, and have lived with it ever since, now retired in SE QLD it is not as bad, I am resigned to it, but if not curable there are ways to deal with it.
