Cool Climate Palms and Ferns

Palms and ferns are often associated with tropical climates but ‘Burke’s Backyard’ recently looked at some palms and ferns which can grow in colder areas.

Palms for cool climates

  • Dwarf sugar palm (Arenga engleri): A small growing, clump-forming palm to 2.5-3m (8-10′). It has distinctive fish-tail shaped ends to its leaves and is extremely attractive. Growing best in semi-shade, it can tolerate temperatures down to -7
