Chris and Geoff Ellis are FJ Holden fanatics. Over the years they’ve rebuilt and restored fifteen, including the six in the family at the moment. In May 1997 work began on a new project – they decided to stretch an FJ. They thought it would take approximately 12 months to complete, and cost a maximum of $45,000.
How it was done
A complete car was cut in half, a piece was put in the centre and the body work was reinforced. The outside still has that authentic look, but underneath there are Holden parts including HQ, HR, HT and Commodore. The original 138 engine was replaced with a 202 Holden which runs on both gas and petrol, and Commodore disc brakes were fitted. The rear doors were lengthened for easier access, and a few modern luxuries were added, like air-conditioning, seatbelts and a sound system. The exterior of the car is painted ivory, which is close to the original colour. Inside, the upholstery is burgundy leather, with beige carpets and hood lining.
The ‘garage’
Eighteen months later, and $130,000 poorer, proud limousine owners Geoff and Chris realised they had a new problem. Where do you keep a 20′ stretched FJ Holden? Geoff already had two 2 car garages, but they were packed with his things, so they had to extend the house to make room for the car!
Today
So far the car has been used for two weddings, an 80th birthday and a 30th wedding anniversary, with Geoff as the driver. Chris is happy that so many people enjoy seeing the car and remembering their own FJ’s and the good times they had. The number plate is 1Memories.
