Tree Lanterns

Rita Hill showed how to light up those summer nights and add a festive touch to your garden.

You’ll need

  • jam jars
  • wire
  • glass spray paint
  • tea lights

Making your lanterns

  1. Cut the wire into 50cm lengths. Twist and loop the wire to create detachable jar handles that can be hung over branches and bushes in the garden.
  2. Hang the jars on the clothesline and spray with different coloured glass paints. Leave to dry.
  3. Put a tea light in each jar, and hang in the garden.

(Warning: never leave a burning candle unattended.)

Understand my tree is called the Common Lillypilly: it has dark glossy green leaves and and abundance of pink, cherry sized berries, much loved by birds. It is nearly twice as high above the roofline, gives good summer shade to the garage. When my parents planted it about 40 or 50 years ago they may have thought it would remain a bush rather than become a massive tree. It is planted directly beside the concrete pathway and directly beside (about 3 feet away from) the garage brick wall. Issue symptoms: The concrete path has been slightly lifted in part by the roots. Further along on the same wall axis (kitchen wall) there are some small ‘staircase’ cracks in the brick work. A builder said the staircase cracks were not a big issue, possibly I can just measure or mortar this. The builder said the tree was massive and would not grow further. The neighbours garage wall has a small crack also, and he has ‘mentioned’ that his garage door does not shut as well as it might. Don’s Expert Answers: Fruit drop on a Kennsington Mango tree the tree is about 15 years old the tree has fruited twice in the last 7 years both times over 200 mangoes each time the last time was 2 years ago it gets flowers all in the season the mangoes start to form but they turn black and drop

Don’s Expert Answers: We have dug out an establish palm tree in front of our house and would like to replant in the same spot with another tree (2-3m max height as there is overhead wire above) . Would the new tree thrive if planted on the same spot and is there any recommendations on preparing the site.
  5. Don’s Expert Answers: mandarin tree needs pruning but has already started to start growing fruit.It is a very old tree,but produces beautiful sweet fruit.I would hate to prune and lose fruit ,but it is really a big tree.
