Photo Frame

Rita Hill demonstrated how to make a frame for your favourite photograph using a wax resist process. This is also a good technique for special birthday cards, post cards or anything else you'd like to show off. When designing the frame take your inspiration from your picture, using colours and perhaps repeating a pattern or theme from that image.

You'll need

  • 1 pine frame
  • 1 household candlea
  • pencil
  • coarse steel woolwater-based
  • paintall-purpose sealer

Step by step instructions

1. Remove the glass and backing from the frame.
2. Roughly draw your design onto the frame with a pencil, pressing lightly. (Note: loose, flowing lines are best. A small, tight drawing will not suit this type of procedure.)
3. Draw over the pencil lines with a white household candle.
4. Paint the frame. (Tip: use a mix of colours, or shades of the same colour for a more interesting finish.)
5. When the frame is totally dry, rub it back with the coarse steel wool, removing all the wax and revealing the design.
6. Seal the frame with an all-purpose sealer. When the sealer is dry, you are ready to frame your photo.

Cost and availability:

Pine frame, $11.95.
All-purpose sealer, $9.95.
Paint tubes, $3.75 each.
The above items are available from craft stores. Candles and steel wool are available at supermarkets and hardware stores.
