Photo Cards

Choosing a greeting card to convey a special message to a friend or loved one is never easy. Bought cards are often so impersonal! Rita Hill demonstrated how to make cards at home that really say it with feeling.

You’ll need

  • glue
  • cardboard
  • photos
  • scissors

Tips on making your cards

For a classy look, have the photos printed with a white frame around them. Then simply cut the cardboard to size and stick the photo down, making sure you apply the glue right to the edges. Cut a window or frame into the card to highlight an interesting part of the photo. Take a piece of cardboard three times the size of your photo, cut the window out of the middle section, centre the photo and then glue down one flap to cover the photo. The frame can be cut to any shape depending on the photo and the subject. Use photographs of the garden – close ups of flowers or foliage can look very effective. You don’t have to have perfect photos – just use the good bits! Photographs of kids’ drawings also make wonderful cards.

Further information

Some photo shops charge more to process photographs with white borders, so shop around (about $2 extra for 24 prints). If you order multiple prints of one photo you’ll usually pay about 30% less than having one print done at a time.
