Following the building of a DIY compost bin, Don’s recipe for compost is below:

Wet ingredients;

Garden weeds
Grass clippings
Kitchen scraps

Dry ingredients

Lucerne hay or just hay– pea straw in southern states is just as good
Autumn leaves (if available)
Horse stable manure – this contains wood shavings as well as manure

Add thin alternating layers of wet and dry ingredients

Add blood and bone – just for a bit of fertiliser

Then add a couple of handfulls of dirt.  This has all the organisms you need to activate the composting process.

Give the bin a spin every day if you can – or every second day
