Weird Carrots

Don reached into the Burke's Backyard mailbag and pulled out two interesting letters from viewers with problems growing vegetables. Both gardeners enclosed photographs of twisted, bizarre-looking carrots. Carrots need a light, well-drained soil, and poor soil preparation can often lead to the type of distortion seen in the photos. Before sowing carrot seed always dig the soil over really well. Cultivate to a depth of about 30cm (1'), break up lumps of soil and remove any stones. Developing carrot roots will branch and distort if they hit rock or compacted soil.
