Faking it Tips

In the Garden > Gardening Tips, Books, Techniques and Tools

Even small projects or small repairs around the home can be expensive. Don looked at some of the great products available at hobby shops, for classy results without costing too much money.

Hobby paint

You can buy spray on paints at normal hardware stores. They come in copper, brass and gold. These can simply be sprayed onto something for an authentic metal look. However, at hobby shops you can get a whole range of colours, as well as bronzes, brasses and silvers. They come in tiny little tins, which are perfect for small jobs. Don added some class to a white plastic plumbing pipe by painting it with copper-coloured hobby paint. Hobby stores also sell little brushes and sets of clamps specially designed for fiddly jobs, such as model building.

Plywood

When it comes to hobby projects, one of Don’s favourite materials is 1.5mm thick 3 ply. This is quite strong material that can be wet and bent into all sorts of shapes. It can be used to repair furniture, to repair skirting boards and for making all sorts of hobby projects. People will think they’re constructed from solid timber, when they’re actually made out of relatively cheap, 3 ply.
