Several months ago we showed a story about storm water pipes that had been completely clogged by liquidambar roots. The owners of the tree actually removed an amazing 30 metres (100′) of root from their terracotta pipes! In response to that story, Ed Simmonds of Port Macquarie has written a most interesting letter with two tips to help prevent roots from damaging pipes: when laying down pipes, bury a piece of exposed copper wire next to the pipes when mortaring pipe joints, mix some liquid copper sulphate into the mortar

You might think Ed is telling a couple of old husbands’ tales. In fact, tree roots are extremely sensitive to copper compounds and the science behind his tips is very good.

  3. Don’s Expert Answers: Dear Sir / Madam, May I ask a question about a Lillypilly please? Understand my tree is called the Common Lillypilly: it has dark glossy green leaves and and abundance of pink, cherry sized berries, much loved by birds. It is nearly twice as high above the roofline, gives good summer shade to the garage. When my parents planted it about 40 or 50 years ago they may have thought it would remain a bush rather than become a massive tree. It is planted directly beside the concrete pathway and directly beside (about 3 feet away from) the garage brick wall. Issue symptoms: The concrete path has been slightly lifted in part by the roots. Further along on the same wall axis (kitchen wall) there are some small ‘staircase’ cracks in the brick work. A builder said the staircase cracks were not a big issue, possibly I can just measure or mortar this. The builder said the tree was massive and would not grow further. The neighbours garage wall has a small crack also, and he has ‘mentioned’ that his garage door does not shut as well as it might. My question: Has the tree reached its maximum growth and stopped growing? Your reply would be greatly appreciated, Regards Jenny Macpherson
  4. Don’s Expert Answers: Large Lemon Scented Gum in large backyard. Planted when neighbours all had large backyards, but now houses have been built close to the tree. Is this dangerous? I recently had to cut down and grind the stumps of two other Lemon scented gums as they were very close to the fence line and the new house built in the neighbour’s backyard. The remaining gum is a few metres from where the trees were. Will the dying root systems from the other trees make the remaining tree unstable? Last question are these trees a fire hazard because of the eucalyptus oil?

Don’s Expert Answers: In our Strata building (30 Units) we have a Monstera Deliciosa which has at one root that has penetrated into the building; one Garage has a Monstera Deliciosa root which has gone through the wall and is growing into the space in the Garage. My question is in 2 parts: 1. Have you had any other reports of Monstera Deliciosa damaging buildings?; and 2. What is your recommended method of removing the plant permanently?
