Imagine a backyard waist deep in wandering jew and fishbone ferns, with a 10 metre drop to boot! A landscaping challenge, don’t you think? Well, Burke’s Backyard recently visited such a garden, and discovered that an amazing transformation had taken place.

How it was done

The owners wanted a low maintenance garden which would look like natural bush, attract native wildlife, and make use of recycled materials in the construction. Marsupial Landscapes accepted the challenge, and came up with an award winning design for a creek garden. They used old railway sleepers to create levels, and bricks from an old retaining wall to support the steps. A crushed-granite path winds down the site past a series of water cascades and ponds, eventually leading to a sunny garden seat on the lower level. Plants used include bird’s nest ferns (Asplenium australasicum), lomandras (Lomandra longifolia), dianellas (Dianella caerulea) and elkhorns (Platycerium bifurcatum). The result is a relaxing, natural effect, and one which is really not all that difficult to create.
