Parisian Rooftop Garden

Don visited a unique warehouse apartment with a rambling rooftop garden and an outstanding view of the Sydney CBD. The owner, Robert Rigby, has been in the music business for many years and has recently joined Dainty Consolidated Entertainment as Managing Director of a new boutique music label. Robert says that looking down on all the small terrace houses reminds him of Paris, where rooftop gardens are very popular. He designed the high-rise garden himself, and has succeeded in creating a restful and stylish urban oasis, perfect for relaxing and entertaining.

The apartment is on two levels. On the first floor there is a large open living, dining and kitchen area as well as the main bathroom and two bedrooms. Robert loves art, and has collected many paintings over the years which decorate all the walls. A sitting room on the second floor has sliding glass doors which open onto an expansive L-shaped paved courtyard, featuring peripheral plantings of clipped and shaped box hedges, gardenias camellias, murrayas, lilly pillys and viburnums. The garden extends from the courtyard up a narrow flight of steps to a sunny deck. The whole area takes on an entirely different character at night, when 60 lights add a magical, almost surreal quality to the garden.
