Melbourne Tropical Garden

You’d think that having a tropical garden in Melbourne would be impossible, but you can create wonderful tropical feel gardens in the cooler zones of Australia.

Garden design

The garden features stone tiles, blue coloured river pebbles, lava rock lanterns and pavers, and bronze birds. These were all shipped from Indonesia in a container. Features in the garden are linked to the inside of the house – so the dark, warm internal timbers are similar in colour to the overlapping Merbou decking in the garden; lava rock pavers and lanterns and charcoal coloured pots relate to the charcoal coloured carpet in the living room; and blue river pebbles reflect the colour of the tiles in the bathrooms. The fountain has a bamboo spout that trickles into a pond containing goldfish and water plants.

Succulents such as agave, sedum and yucca add lovely blue/green tones to the garden. All the plants are thriving, including cordylines, which look a bit sad through the Melbourne winter but colour up beautifully when the warm weather returns. New Zealand Flax (Phormium tenax), was chosen for its colour and texture. It looks very tropical but will tolerate freezing conditions.
