Hodge Native Garden

Regular viewers of Burke's Backyard may remember the garden belonging to Merve and Olwyn Hodge, at Logan Reserve in Brisbane. This is one of the very best native gardens in the country, and it will open under Australia's Open Garden Scheme this weekend.

The vast majority of plants in the garden are Australian natives (although there is a small number of African proteas and some exotics in pots). Grevilleas predominate, but other trees, shrubs, ground covers, annuals, palms, ferns and orchids are also represented. The condition of the garden depends on natural rainfall, as there is no town water. Merve and Olwyn have selected plants that are drought tolerant, and have used mulch extensively throughout this 'water-wise' garden.

Merve was the originator of Grevillea 'Superb', G. 'Coconut Ice', G. 'Strawberry Blond' and G. 'Firesprite'.
