DIY privacy screen, with espaliered lemon tree
In the new-look April 2010 issue of Burke’s Backyard magazine, on sale now nationally, our practical Hands On section shows, step-by-step, how to build a beautiful timber-look privacy screen, and then how to grow an espaliered lemon tree against the screen.
The privacy screen itself is made from a great new material called Knotwood, which has the look and feel of timber, bit it’s actually aluminium. This is the ideal weekend DIY project for the home handyperson.
What’s an espalier, you ask? Well, it’s much easier than it looks, and in the April 2010 issue of Burke’s Backyard magazine we also show how that’s done, step by step, using a lemon tree. An espalier is just a way of training a plant so it grows flat, up against a wall or a fence. Citrus trees such as lemons and limes are ideal for the espalier treatment, which is a great space-saving way to grow a fruit tree in small spaces.
