Weirdest Plant In The World

In the Garden > Flowering Plants & Shrubs

The orchid qualifies as a strong contender for being the weirdest plant in the world.  Their seed is like dust; it floats in the air & is the smallest seed of all plants, taking more than 1.25 million seeds to weigh a single gram.  A specific fungus allows orchid seed to germinate by providing food for it that the orchid can’t provide itself.

They are the largest family of flowering plants in the world with over 30,000 species and are found in most countries, especially in tropical regions where the majority of them grow on the trunks and branches of trees.

UNEXPECTED GROWING PLACES

Less exotic plants are also sometimes found growing in strange places.  This is usually the result of birds eating seeds from a particular plant then excreting them when they are perched in another tree.  Don showed a date palm that was growing in the crotch of a gum tree.  Clearly a bird had eaten a fruit from the date palm then deposited the seed in the gum tree.
