Victor Chang Roses
Don looked at ‘Sister Bernice’ and ‘Fiona’s Wish’, two outstanding roses that come with an added bonus – $1 from each sale will be donated to support the work of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
‘Sister Bernice’ – the 2002 fund-raising rose for the Victor Chang Institute
A striking shrub rose to about 1.2m tall (3′), with glossy, deep green foliage. It produces clusters of apricot and pink double blooms on gently arching canes, followed by distinctive hips in late summer and autumn. It is disease tolerant, and does well planted in either the garden or in pots.
The rose is named after Sister Bernice Elphick, a Sister of Charity, who was Rectress and Administrator of St. Vincent’s Hospital from 1963 until she retired in 1997. Sister Bernice was much loved and respected by Victor, having dedicated her life, as he did, to the care and wellbeing of others.
‘Fiona’s Wish’
This classic hybrid tea rose has double cherry red blooms with a yellow reverse, and an outstanding, ‘rose and fruit’ fragrance. In fact, it was voted ‘Most Fragrant Rose’ at the Australian National Rose Trial Ground. The bush itself grows to around 1.5m (4′) tall, and has glossy, bronze green foliage.
‘Fiona’s Wish’ is named to honour heart patient and celebrity, Fiona Coote. Fiona works tirelessly and spends an enormous amount of her time helping the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
