Don looked at a new variety of hardenbergia called Bushy Blue.

Common name: Bushy Blue Botanic name: Hardenbergia violacea ‘Bushy Blue’

Description:

Developed from a selected seedling of the native climber Hardenbergia violacea, Bushy Blue is a low shrub growing to around 60cm x 60cm (2′ x 2′). It has blue/grey leaves and clusters of violet/purple pea-shaped flowers in late winter and early spring.

Best climate:
Bushy Blue grows in most areas of Australia.

banks and retaining walls
mass plantings
rock gardens
native gardens

Downside:

Flowers are violet/purple, not blue!

Care:

Grow Bushy Blue in full sun. It will tolerate most soils, as long as the drainage is good. If necessary, raise the level of the garden bed to improve the drainage. Mulch to conserve moisture. Bushy Blue can be left unpruned, or trimmed and shaped to create a low hedge.

Getting started:

Ask for Bushy Blue at your local nursery. 140mm (6″) pots cost around $11.
