Cherry Blossoms in Japan

Burke's Backyard Overseas

The cherry blossom (Sakura) is the national flower of Japan. In spring, the Japanese travel all over their country to see the wonderful displays of cherry blossom. They regard this as a time of happiness, celebration and optimism. Viewing sites in Tokyo include Shinjuku Park, the bank of the Sumida River near Asakusa and Ueno Park, which has avenues lined with hundreds of cherry trees. Boisterous blossom viewing parties (hanami) are held each spring, from early to mid-April.

Nearly all the cherries in Tokyo are the early-flowering Prunus x yedoensis, the Tokyo Cherry, which has single, white flowers. Cultivars with double and semi-double flowers, such as 'Kanzan' (fuchsia-purple), 'Shirotae' (white) and 'Fugenzo' (deep rosy pink), are popular in Australia. However, the Japanese prefer the simple elegance and single flowers of the Tokyo Cherry.

Night-time viewing

Another famous blossom viewing event is held at the Miidera Temple at Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. The grounds of Miidera Temple are illuminated at night, so visitors can enjoy seeing the cherry blossoms amongst the historic wooden pagodas and scenery. Up-lighting is used on a large scale, along with traditional box lanterns.
