Jackie French has a recipe for a rose aftershave for men that doesn’t smell like roses but which should make their presence more acceptable on a hot summer’s day.

What you will need

  • 1 cup of white wine vinegar (not malt vinegar)
  • 12 bay leaves (fresh or dry)
  • 1 teaspoon of whole cloves (not ground cloves)
  • 1-2 cups of fragrant rose petals

What to do

Put all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for five minutes with the lid on. It is very important to put the lid on because it prevents the perfume escaping. Remove from heat and allow to cool before straining and pouring the aftershave into bottles. Allow to mature for at least three weeks before using.
