House of Riverstones

Don and the Burke's Backyard team visited a fascinating house which was built thirty years ago using local riverstones, and extensively renovated by the present owners. The original exterior walls look particularly attractive with 'waves' of small stones throughout, but generally the larger stones are at the base and the smaller ones near the roof line. Inside the house the pebble theme is repeated in one corner of a large spectacular room with exposed beams supporting a cathedral-style ceiling.

The owners decided that an Asian influence would be most appropriate for the outside entertaining area, and they chose neutral colours such as creams and fawns to blend with the riverstones on the walls of the building. The pool surrounds are paved with Tamala limestone from Western Australia, which not only looks good but also stays cool underfoot in the heat of the summer. The alang alang pavilion has built-in seating around the perimeter and includes a sauna room.

Several large avaries on the property house pheasants and waterfowl including Mandarin Ducks, Silver Pheasants, Golden Pheasants, Lady Amherst Pheasants, Siamese Firebacks, Sun Conyers and Chattering Lories.
