Building Gadgets

Home Among Gumtrees > Around the House

Scott Cam’s favourite gadgets make life a little easier for the home handyman.

  • Angle Meter ($30)
Very handy instrument for measuring any slope or angle from the horizontal, such the pitch of a roof, the slope of a block of land or the height of a tree.
  • 3 in 1 Metal, Voltage & Stud Detector ($42.40)
Designed to locate live or dead electric cables, water pipes, nails and other metal objects and wood studs.
  • Bench Holdfast ($154)
Use a bench holdfast to keep timber firmly in place as you cut. Bench clamps screw onto any bench, piece of wood or set of stools.
  • Drill with Maklite ($240 - $600)
There’s no need to juggle a torch and a drill if you need to do accurate work in a dark area. Scott demonstrated the latest in drills, which comes with a light built into the tool handle.
  • Pipe and Sink Cleaner ($11.50)
This device works like a miniature plumber’s eel. Just insert the metal screw end into the drain and work it back and forth. It will collect debris such as hair, scum and grease from the S-bend.
  • Large grill basket (approx. $20)
Scott calls these gadgets '20 piece of meat fold down grill turners'. They are actually called large grill baskets and they enable you to turn all the meat on the barbecue at once.

Further information

All the gadgets Scott demonstrated in our segment are available from hardware stores, except for the large grill baskets, which are available from shops such as Barbeques Galore.
