Ben and Mavis Mundey have created an amazing rock garden on their property in Toowoomba near the mountains of the Great Dividing Range. The couple have collected every rock in the garden from mountainous grazing land in the region. To bring the rocks home they broke up one of the rocks into smaller pieces to fit in their HR Holden and trailer and then reconstructed them with cement and water, positioning and securing them with bricks and mortaron site. The project took from 1984 to 1991 involving 131 trips over 9000km.

Garden design

The inspiration for the amazing garden was Ben’s love of waterfalls and pools of water which have been reconstructed on their hillside. Ben Mundey started the project in his late 60s and does not see age as a barrier for any sort of hard physical labour, instead the couple have found the project good physical therapy. Their method of moving the rocks was inch by inch using a crow bar and wooden cart and ramp.

Despite the Queensland location, the Great Dividing Range lends itself to cool climate gardens. The plants throughout the garden include miniature varieties of conifers, tree ferns and dissectum maples.
