You might remember Gardenworld, a wonderful nursery complex in Keysborough, Victoria, which was featured on Burke’s Backyard. This week, Don visited a similar nursery complex in Sydney, where specialist nurseries have grouped together to provide some really classy shopping!

Palmland & Sydney Wildflower Nursery North

As well as an incredible range of palms, Palmland also stocks orchids, cycads, bromeliads, native plants and rainforest plants. Don was particularly impressed by a beautiful ruby ginger (Curcuma rubescens). Like many gingers, ruby ginger dies down in winter, but it is well worth growing for its striking red stems and lovely green leaves.

Imperial Gardens

Ken Lamb, Managing Director of Imperial Gardens, told Don that they have everything you need to create a traditional Japanese garden. They also have a landscaping service, and they run courses on the principles of Japanese gardening.

Fish Works

At The Fish Works you can find koi carp, tropical fish, goldfish and fishponds. In fact, everything you need to create a wonderful water garden

Mr Bamboo

Mr Bamboo grows and sells hundreds of varieties of bamboo, including clumping bamboo (non-invasive) and running bamboo (confined in ‘escape proof planters’). Here you can buy the gorgeous Timorese black bamboo (Bambusa lako) shown on Burke’s Backyard recently. This clumping variety has thick black culms with some thin green striping, and large tropical leaves. It reaches 15m (45’) or more in the tropics, but only 8-10m (24-30’) in subtropical zones.

The Buddha Belly Cafe

A great place to relax and enjoy Asian inspired dishes when you’ve finished your shopping. The cafÈ is housed in a Balinese-style structure and is situated between the Imperial Gardens and Palmland.

Further details

Ruby ginger (Curcuma rubescens) costs around $42.50 for 300mm (12″) pots, and $14.50 for 150mm (6″) pots. Timorese black bamboo (Bambusa lako) costs about $150 for 300mm (12″) pots.
